 Highlights of the week:

  • In Phonics we have been focusing on ‘gh’ as code for ‘g’ in words such as ghost and ghastly. We also had a look at the suffixes -ness and -ment. We used our graffiti skills to write as many words with these endings as we could.
  • In Maths we finished our unit on mass, capacity and temperature by exploring the temperature of outside, the classroom and the hall using thermometers. We learned the unit of measurement ‘degrees centigrade’ and ‘degrees celsius', written as C. Towards the end of the week, we started our new unit on statistics. We explored tally charts as a method for recording data. We then used our data to create tables.
  • In English we started a new unit focusing on the book ‘The Great Explorer’ by Chris Judge. We started by using the reading skill of prediction, to predict what might happen next to the main character Tom. We had a go at asking each other open ended questions, these are questions that we can not answer with a yes or a no. This helped us to develop our ability to justify and give reasons for our answers. We then had a look at defining unknown and new vocabulary from the story.

Highlights of the week:

● In English, we continued to explore the text Meerkat Mail. We focused on the different postcards throughout the story and used these to help us plan our own postcards home from a trip to Kenya. We have been focusing on including coordinating conjunctions such as and, but, or, so and yet into our writing to help us combine two short sentences and ideas. We have also been working really hard to try and start our sentences in different ways. We spent a long time designing our postcards and carefully chose the design for the front. We ended the week by looking at an example reading SATs paper. We worked through the questions together, sharing our strategies and ways to find the answers.

  Highlights of the week:

  • Last week in English we received a mystery package from a meerkat. This week we read the story Meerkat Mail and then sequenced the story, using images and adjectives to describe how Sunny the meerkat was feeling throughout the story. We then spent a few days looking at different spelling, punctuation and grammar activities. We have tried lots of different spelling strategies when spelling commonly misspelt words. We used rainbow writing, pyramid writing, clapping syllables, speed writing and even had a go at writing the word on each other's backs! We completed The Mystery of the Missing Sunglasses, where we needed to work as a team to find clues to solve the problem. To find the clues we needed to correct a range of spelling, punctuation and grammar mistakes. We ended the week by writing our own letter home from a trip to South Africa, just like Sunny.
