Highlights of the week:

Phonics:

In phonics this week we have been learning some tricky words. We have learnt the words ‘a’, ‘I’ and ‘the’. The children had a range of activities including reading and writing them. Learning these words by sight will support your child’s reading in school and at home.

Maths:

This week we have been learning about numbers 1, 2 and 3. We have been learning about the composition of these numbers and the different ways they can be represented. The children have been counting and representing the numbers in lots of different ways.

PE:

This week in PE Laura (the dance teacher) came in to teach the children some Bollywood style dancing. The children all thoroughly enjoyed themselves when learning the different movements of the routine before putting them all together. The children will have PE this term on a Tuesday afternoon every week with Laura. She will be teaching them a new style of dance each week based on traditional dances from around the world.

Music:

In music we completed our listen and response, we listened to ‘Boogie Wonderland by Earth, Wind and Fire’. We talked about how the music made us feel and about the things it made us think of. We enjoyed learning and performing the song ‘The Grand Old Duke of York’ and practised some actions to help us remember the lyrics.

Topic:

This week we have continued exploring different celebrations around the world. We have talked about how a celebration is when you do something fun and enjoyable for a special occasion. This week we looked at bonfire night. We linked this to our inquiry questions of ‘how are we the same? And how are we different?’ The children shared their different experiences of bonfire night and talked about what they do to celebrate.
This week we have introduced the children to the concept of ‘tradition’. We have talked about how a tradition is Something that has happened in the past and is remembered every year. We have linked this to the tradition of ‘Guy Fawkes Night’ and Remembrance Day.

Home learning ideas:

  • Your child will have an additional ‘I’ and ‘the’ sheet in their phonics wallet (picture attached below). Could you talk through the sheet with your child and work through the activities, if you complete this please share a picture with us on Tapestry!
  • Please practise your child’s flashcards for the three tricky words we have learnt this week. Maybe you could hide them around the house and go on a hunt for them.
  • Following on from our number work this week. Lots of traditional stories have sets of 3 characters in them, such as Goldilocks and the Three Bears, The Three Billy Goats Gruff and the Three Little Pigs. You could read some of these stories with a grown-up and then draw a picture of your favourite.
