Highlights of the week:


We have been learning the letter group -ss which is code for /s/ as in glass. We also learnt the letter -b which is code for /b/ as in bat. In your child’s phonics wallet you will find the sheets that they have completed in the lessons this week.

In phonics we have talked about ‘tweaking’ or changing the sound of a word slightly to match our accents for example, glass and pass.

We have then had a go at forming our letters correctly. We have been working on our pencil grip using our ‘froggy legs’ and trying to form the letters correctly using the word patters/rhymes to support us.

Core text:

This week we have been reading ‘The Gingerbread Man’, a traditional tale. The children have enjoyed exploring the vocabulary, thinking about the characters and setting. They have also had a go at retelling the story and sequencing the story in the correct order.


This week we have been exploring the composition of the number 5. We have been thinking about lots of different ways to make the number 5 and used a range of resources to help us, such as a part whole model, tens frame and numicon.


This week we started our new unit in PE which is Gymnastics. The children are going to work on their balance and body coordination over the term to support their core strength. Over the next term the children will experiment with different ways of moving.

Home learning ideas:

  • In your child's phonics wallet you will find an additional ‘b’ sheet for them, you can talk to them about the sheet.
  • Continue to support your child with their reading by practising reading the ‘phonics comics’ in their phonics wallet. This week we have sent home the comic ‘A bug’.
  • Don’t forget that this week in school we have been talking about people who are special to us. If you haven’t had a chance to share a picture with us yet of someone who is special to your child please send us a photo on Tapestry. We are using these photos to start our topic display. It would be great if everyone had something to share.
