17th - 21st January 2022

Highlights of the week:

We have learnt the letter group ai which is code for /ai/ as in aid. We have also learnt the letter group ay which is code for /ay/ as in tray. In your child’s phonics folder you will find some of the sheets that they have completed in the lessons this week.

We have then had a go at forming our letters correctly. We have been working on our pencil grip using our ‘froggy legs’ and trying to form the letters correctly using the word patters/rhymes to support us.

Core text:

This week we have been reading ‘Last Stop on Market Street’. The children have enjoyed exploring the vocabulary, thinking about the characters and setting. We have learnt about the meaning of the word ‘neighbourhood’ and looked at the neighbourhood shown in the book's illustrations. We have also talked about what a soup kitchen is. You can find a read aloud copy of this book on YouTube by clicking the link below.

This week we have been exploring ‘1 less’. We have used ‘first, then and now’ stories to help us work out what ‘1 less than’ a number is. We have practised counting forwards and backwards from any given number. We have enjoyed singing nursery rhymes that count backwards. For example, 5 little monkeys swinging through the trees.

As part of our ‘Dreams and Goals’ unit we have been learning about always trying our best and never giving up, even when things are difficult. We have linked this learning to our schools core value of determination. We thought about our goals that we could work on in school and at home. Some of the children thought of ideas such as working on their reading, handwriting or counting.

As our gymnasts grow in confidence, they will move on to climbing onto and jumping off of equipment, playing games in which they have to listen as well as move. They have also had a go at adding balances to their sequences and performing them with increasing control.

We have really enjoyed working scientifically this week during our independent learning time. This week the children enjoyed exploring shadows. The children created their own shadow puppets and then used a torch to put on a shadow puppet show. They also explored shadows outside and had a go at drawing around each other's shadows.

Home learning ideas:

  • Your child will have an additional ‘I can read’ sheet in their phonics folder.
  • Take some time to look through your child’s new phonics folder with them and pick out some pages to practise. You can record this as part of your child’s reading in their reading journal. You may notice some handwritten flashcards tucked in the front of your child’s phonics folder. These words or letters are ones your child found difficult to read during their 1:1 reading activities. You will not always receive these.
  • Could you sing songs of the nursery rhymes that we have been singing in maths to explore the concept of ‘1 less’. We have been singing: 5 currant buns, 5 little ducks, 10 green bottles and 5 speckled frogs. Can you sing these and then create a first, then and now story?
