24th - 28th April 2023

Highlights of the week:

This week's English lessons focused on a diary entry inspired by ‘The Heart and the Bottle’. We looked at different suffixes, such as; -ness and -ly. We then learnt about multi-clause sentences, which are sentences that contain more than one clause or idea. They were taught that these sentences often contain a main clause and one or more subordinate clauses, which provide additional information or detail about the main clause. We watched https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FK2Gyto5gTQ, which definitely got stuck in our heads.Bottle2

In maths this week, we learnt about adding and subtracting units of measurement for weight, specifically kilograms (kg) and grams (g). We then looked at how to convert between the two units, and how to use this knowledge to solve problems involving addition and subtraction of weights.

In guided reading lessons, we read and analysed a non-fiction text titled "How to Change the World". Specifically, we focused on the section about saving the whales and discussed the main ideas and messages presented in the text. Students then used their understanding of the topic to create a poster aimed at encouraging people to save the whales.

Our enquiry question for this term is ‘Why do we believe different things?’

In science we looked at forces, we learnt about two basic forces, push and pull. They explored different examples of these forces, such as pushing a toy car or pulling a door. They were taught that these forces have direction and strength, and that we can use tools to measure them. We also learnt how these forces can cause an object to move or change direction, and what factors can affect this. As a fun way to reinforce the concepts of push and pull, we played a game of push-pull charades.

In year 3 art lessons, we explored street art and the varying perspectives surrounding it. We debated whether street art is a crime and why some people think this. They learnt about different opinions on street art and used this knowledge to create a collage that expressed these views.

Year 6

In computing lessons, we used the JS Paint program to learn about digital drawing and the grouping tool. JS Paint is a web-based drawing program that allows users to create images and graphics using a variety of tools and features. https://jspaint.app/#local:fe9c78ee318d5.  We looked at how to use the drawing tools, including the brush, pencil, and shape tools, to create digital drawings. They were also introduced to the concept of grouping, which allows them to select multiple objects and treat them as a single image.

Home learning:

  • Please make sure you are reading with your child at least four times a week and commenting on their reading in their reading record book.
  • Your child has come home with a list of spellings, which we will practise on Fridays. Please can you support your child with learning these during the week.
  • This week’s spellings are words with the /k/ sound spelt c and words with the /ʃ/ sound spelt ch; scheme, echo, chalet, ache, monarch, parachute, chute, anchor, chaos, school.
  • Now we have TimesTables Rockstars, please support your child to access it online. It is recommended that children play TTRS for 5 minutes a day for maximum impact.
