23rd - 27th January 2023

Highlights of the week:

In English this week, we wrote a setting description to support our story writing next week. We started with a grammar focus and looked at challenging ourselves with our vocabulary in expanded noun phrases. Then we moved onto looking at fronted adverbials. Towards the end of the week, we planned and wrote a setting description. I was so impressed with the vocabulary and word choices the children were able to come up with.

In Maths this week, we continued to use our knowledge of multiplying 2 digit numbers by 10 and what this did to the value of each digit to multiply any 2 digit number by any 1 digit number. At the end of the week, we started dividing bigger 2 digit numbers by 1 digit.

During our Guided Reading lessons this week, we have been reading the ‘Book of Brilliant Bugs’. We looked at prediction, vocabulary and retrieval skills. The children enjoyed predicting what the book will be about just from the subheading, ‘In Disguise’ and had lots of great ideas.

Our enquiry question for this term is ‘Can anywhere be home?

In History, we were learning about the struggles of early man and how to survive. To do this, we became hunters and gatherers. As a tribe, we went outside, set up a base camp (tray) and gathered our food, using spears (bean bags). However, we came across a few challenges and soon discovered that it is not a good idea to leave base camp unattended as the other tribes or wild animals stole our food. We had great fun ‘hunting’ for our food.

In Geography this week, we used the research from last week and created a travel brochure to persuade people that Spain is a great place to visit. The information included famous Spanish people, things to do and foods that people associate with Spain.

In Science this week, we were looking at skeletons. We had to match the skeletons to the animals, some were more challenging than others. We then made fortune tellers to test each other’s animal knowledge and had great fun making them.
