3rd - 6th January 2023

It has been lovely to welcome the children back after the winter break.

Phonics

This week we have spent time revising ‘y, -y’ as some of the children were less confident with the sounds this letter can make during our assessment last term. The children have been reminded that this letter can make the sound for:
y - yes, yellow
-y /igh/ - cry, my, supply
-y /ee/ - sunny, body, crunchy

Maths

The children moved onto looking at place value within 20 this week. We have spent a lot of time making the number ten as well as teen numbers to 16 using different resources. We introduced the children to Dienes / Base 10 before the break and will continue to use this resource to support their understanding.

Science

In science this week we introduced the children to our new topic, animals including humans. For this half term we are going to focus on animals leading up to our school trip to Marwell Zoo. This week we have looked at different animal groups including mammals, reptiles, amphibians, fish and birds. We researched and took notes of the key characteristics for each group.

English

In English this week we have been looking at riddles, with a focus on animal riddles. The children have been challenged with trying to work out a number of riddles and have had a lot of enjoyment doing so. Additionally, we have been learning a riddle as a whole class including some actions to help us remember this.

Computing

We have moved on to the unit ‘Programming Toys’ where we will be learning what an algorithm is and how they can help us in our daily lives. The children began this unit playing a game of ‘Simon Says’ which always ends up with a few giggles.
