13th - 17th March 2023

Highlights of the week:

Please can you continue to encourage your children to play Numbots at home, it would be lovely to see more Year 1s receiving certificates in assembly Therefore, we have set the children a challenge of increasing that number before the Easter holidays!

Good luck!

Phonics:

We have been learning some of the trickier sounds in unit 7 this week in time for our phonics screening in June. The letter group is ‘aw’ and ‘au’ found in the words prawn and launch. The children have started to notice this letter group within our reading and are working hard to sound it out independently. We have spent quite a bit of time using our sound dashes to help us write out the word on whiteboards.

After the Easter break, we will be revising all of the taught letter groups based on the needs within each class.

Maths:

This week we began our unit on length and height. We talked about different words that we could use to describe the height of someone, for example

‘Mr Hammond is tall but Mrs Le Peuple is taller’

‘A dog is taller than a mouse but shorter than a giraffe’

Towards the end of the week, we began using a ruler to measure different lengths around the classroom.

English:

We have completed a site of application piece of work based on instruction writing of ‘How to take care of a dog’. The children were able to recall many of the features of instruction writing. It has helped inform us of where we need to go with our learning. The children will begin their unit on instruction writing next week.

Science:

We spent some time outside this week to remind the children of their senses and how we could use them to take in our surroundings.
